Things to consider before having ear surgery:

  • Maximum discomfort will occur the first few days after surgery and then will subside gradually.

  • Nausea can occur following any surgical procedure and generally passes by the first postoperative day.

  • During the first week or two after surgery, you will experience some swelling, bruising and some drainage.

  • The ear areas may be a bit sensitive to light and medium pressure for the first few weeks after surgery.

  • When sleeping, your head should be supported by two or three pillows in order to keep the head adequately elevated and should refrain from sleeping on your side during recovery.

Please follow this list of medications and supplements to avoid prior to having your procedure.

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, can help treat multiple concerns including overly large ears (macrotia), protruding ears occurring on one or both sides in varying degrees and adult dissatisfaction with a previous ear surgery.  Dr. Holland can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. Otoplasty is commonly performed on teenagers due to the profound benefits to appearance and self-esteem.

post-treatment care

Following otoplasty, patients receive post-procedure care instructions to ensure optimal healing. These instructions typically include managing discomfort with prescribed pain medication, applying dressings as directed to protect the surgical site, and minimizing swelling with cold compresses. Patients may also be instructed to wear a headband to maintain the new ear shape and position. Certain activities, such as sleeping on the side or wearing headphones, should be avoided to prevent pressure or irritation to the ears. Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Holland are essential to monitor healing progress and address any concerns.
